CONEL held the annual Freshers Fair last week to welcome all new students to the College at both the Enfield and Tottenham campus to help them settle in to College Life. The fair is designed for first year students (but available to all students) to help make them aware of the support services available to them both within the College and the local community. Hundreds of students attended making it one of the most successful Fairs yet.

As well as finding out about the activities of the Student Union and the other college support services, local organisations are also invited to attend including Fusion Lifestyle, Metro Bank and the Greater London Authority (GLA).

Volunteer Coordinator, Amanda Lamb at the GLA said: “Team London is the Mayor’s volunteering programme for across the capital and I focus special attention on supporting local charities in Haringey that need volunteers, whilst helping local people find suitable volunteering opportunities. Me and one of my volunteers spent 3 hours registering lots of students that were keen to volunteer as a way of complimenting their studies that will improve their employability skills and prospects, plus to have fun! Getting a job after leaving college or University isn’t as easy as it used to be and so students need to be able to show employers how they stand out from the crowd. Volunteering is a great way of doing that so it was definitely a useful event to be part of. Thanks for organising!”

Stalls were available to give advice on enrichment activities, such as the Students’ Union and Mentoring Service, which offers learners the opportunity to volunteer, or seek advice, guidance and motivational support in succeeding at College. Sports organisations also attended to offer students the opportunity to sign up to sports clubs, and charity organisations offered advice on lifestyle, safety and drugs awareness.

AAT Accounting Level 2 student Papiya Sulthana said: “I’ve found the Fair really useful and informative. There are so many services to get involved in and things to do for students at CONEL and I’ve spoken to several different organisations.”

Enrichment Manager, Anthony Robinson said: “The College Freshers' Fair is one of the main events for new and returning learners, packed with stalls showcasing a variety of Enrichment activities and local services that are available to learners to enhance their student life and experiences. For new students the Freshers' Fair is the place to truly kick-start their time at the College by getting involved in the incredible range of student activities on offer.”
