The College of Haringey, Enfield and North East London took part in Enfield Council's School Improvement Service's Enrichment Engineering Week 2016, offering a hands on practical Engineering Workshop at its Enfield Centre today (Friday, 24 June). Nine Year 12 students attended from St Anne’s, Enfield County and Chace Community Schools. The Engineering Week ran from 20 – 24 June 2016.
The students used precision state-of-art engineering drills and cutting machines to create cubes of aluminium, drilled with finely measured holes as they each made a dice fitted with a key ring. The students made detailed notes of the process and showed diligence and enthusiasm as they manufactured their products.

Kay Zantis 14 – 19 Development Officer for the Progression and Pathways Team which is part of Enfield’s School Improvement Service, said “We’ve had a fantastic week of Engineering Experience and the students have also been to Stansted Airport, the V&A museum and Queen Mary College. We’ve organised the week to give the students academic and practical understanding of engineering as they consider going to university or applying for apprenticeships.”
The students who have all finished exams described how much they had enjoyed their week and were looking forward to returning to school to begin their Year 13 studies.
Barry Connelly who led the engineering workshop said: “The skills this group of young people demonstrated today clearly showed that they are the up and coming engineers of the future. I know many of them are considering university applications and I hope they also give careful consideration to the Graduate Apprenticeship routes to industry.”
CONEL launched its new Engineering Centre in May 2016 at a high profile event, which included leading engineering employers, as well as Rob Leak, Enfield Council’s Chief Executive Officer.
