This week it was our Tottenham centre’s turn to host the Jack Petchey Awards for their ESOL students. The Ceremony was opened by the curriculum manager Melike Asan, giving the students a presentation on Jack Petchey and how his Foundation benefits students like themselves all over London and Essex.

The awards were given out to the students by the Head of School for Skills for Life and Teacher Education, Peter Coe and the Course Team Leader Ashi Siddique.

Students were nominated by their fellow students throughout the year with a winner for each month. One of the recipients, Ledion Selimaj, who received the award for great attendance and excellent reading and writing skills, said: “This award makes me extremely happy. I want to go on to become a football coach in the future.”

During the awards Aryan Omar, one of the ESOL students, performed ‘Miran Ali – Biri Slemani Nakai’ a song in his native language of Kurdish. After this performance the rest of the students received their awards before the closing words from Melike Asan. Melike said “You don’t have to be a millionaire to help somebody, you can give your seat up on the bus for the elderly, and you can share your lunch with the hungry. It’s the small things. I am really excited and proud of my students who have all had very good attendance and punctuality, which has resulted in them all passing their exams.”

It was a great opportunity for the students to celebrate the end of the academic year and acknowledge the excellence of their peers.
